Business Intelligence Data Warehouse | illuminate's Data Warehouse Architecture Ideal for Business Intelligence
Note: The typical combination of business intelligence applications and relational database data warehouse technolgy has become very efficient at providing common, backward-looking reports. Where traditional business intelligence / data warehouse systems fail is in answering questions that are unforseen, exploratory, probing...in short, interesting. The enormous effort expended on making current systems answer such questions—and the disappointing results—have left both business users and IT staff frustrated.

RACKWORTHY: ISP multi homing
Note: I was visiting a customer the other day and he told me about a new box he just got in to solve his multi-homing problems for having redundant ISP connections. He has struggled with setup of an ARIN number, wrestled with BGP on a Cisco router and tackled hookup of satellite internet as a path of last resort in a disaster.

Have the Best 4th of July Ever!
Note: I got to thinking one recent rainy day as I watching my kids bounce between watching the flat screen TV to listening to their iPods to chatting with friends online to playing video games, how much better life has become since I was their age in the early 1970s. It's not just that we have more stuff (though we certainly do; the size of the world economy has more than tripled since 1970), but that the stuff we have has improved so much—it's smaller (in the case of electronics) or bigger (meals, houses), faster, higher quality and more functional.

How expensive is free software?
Note: I have seen uncountable comments about how inexpensive the Microsoft data warehouse infrastructure is and even more comments about the low cost of using open source software. It would be easy to believe that for the price of a few computers and a little software you could have a data warehouse running next week.

Note: illuminate is trying to tackle what it sees as the unsolved performance problem of ad-hoc analysis in companies who have made investments in data warehousing and business intelligence. Despite the dramatic price/performance improvements, the illuminate folks think that the limitations of SQL and fixed data structures can cause complex queries to become large IT projects or even complete nightmares.
